Conference Theme

The 2020 Scientists Exploring Non-Academic Career Choices (SEARCH) Symposium, which was originally scheduled for April 4, 2020 in Lawrence, KS, is a collaborative effort between graduate students in the Molecular Biosciences, Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, and Chemistry departments at the University of Kansas. This collaboration was born from a common desire of students in these departments to learn about the career opportunities for PhDs outside of traditional academia. A key focus of the 2020 SEARCH Symposium is to highlight the diversity of STEM professionals taking into consideration the diversity of our trainees.

There are three goals of the SEARCH Symposium:

1) Inform trainees of the diversity of science careers by hosting scientists in occupations including policy, biotechnology/industry, science writing, data science, and government/law.

2) Prepare trainees for non-academic careers by discussing professional skills that students can develop while in graduate school or during postdoctoral training.

3) Foster connections between trainees and local scientists through a networking event featuring companies seeking advanced-degree job applicants.

Conference Theme

The Conservation Symposium, previously the Symposium of Contemporary Conservation Practice, facilitates the development and exchange of ideas and lessons pertaining to contemporary conservation issues in southern Africa.

The Conservation Symposium serves as a bridge between conservation practitioners, scientists and policymakers in a conducive environment to solve real-world problems. It integrates a broad range of disciplines in a meaningful way and creates or strengthens connections both within and between disciplines. It provides an effective platform for researchers to demonstrate the relevance of their work in addressing real-world conservation problems, and to identify new applied research opportunities and direction. It also provides a platform for training on methods for conservation and monitoring.

The Victorian Biodiversity Conference aims to:

  • Showcase projects involving Victorian institutions related to biodiversity (everything from local to global projects).

  • Strengthen networks between Victorian institutions working on biodiversity (academia, industry, not-for-profit and government).

  • Highlight the exceptional work of early career researchers and professionals, while providing networking opportunities with those more established in their careers.
